An orbital-tracking desk, in plain English
Low Earth orbit has gone from a quiet frontier to the busiest neighborhood in space. Roughly ~40,000 objects are now tracked circling the planet, and only about a quarter of them still work. The rest is wreckage: dead satellites, spent rocket stages, and the fragments they shed when they collide or explode. That wreckage does not sit still. It moves at seven to eight kilometers a second, and at those speeds even a fleck of paint carries the punch of a rifle round.
Reentry covers the whole cycle, from launch to fall. On one side is the growing pile of debris overhead and the race to track it, slow its growth, and pull the worst offenders down. On the other is the moment all of that hardware comes home. Something reenters the atmosphere more than three times a day now, most of it burning up over ocean, a small share reaching the ground. We keep a sourced record of those reentries on our reentry watch, and a catalogue of the rare pieces that survived and were found in our recovered debris archive.
The reporting stays honest about what is known and what is not. A reentry forecast made a week out can be off by days, because a small change in solar activity puffs up the upper atmosphere and speeds the fall. A streak in the sky is often a candidate, not a confirmed object. We say so. Every figure on the site traces to a original source, from ESA's Space Environment Report to NASA's Orbital Debris Program Office, and every claim that cannot be checked is framed as what it is. That is the difference between a real publication and a feed of confident guesses.
