The 2008 EAS tank reentry

An astronaut shoved a 635 kg tank off the ISS by hand. Fifteen months later it came home over the Southern Ocean, watched the whole way down.

On 3 November 2008, a refrigerator-sized tank that had been thrown off the International Space Station by an astronaut’s own arms fell back into the atmosphere and burned over the ocean south of Tasmania. The Early Ammonia Servicer, or EAS, spent 15 months circling the planet as one of the largest pieces of hand-jettisoned space junk on record. Its slow, tracked descent drew headlines and a memorable Slashdot post, “Space Litter To Hit Earth.”

What the EAS tank was

The EAS was a reserve coolant tank. The ISS moves waste heat with loops of liquid ammonia, and during the station’s early assembly the program wanted a backup supply on hand in case a loop leaked. The tank held that spare ammonia. It reached the station in 2001, mounted on the P6 truss segment that carried the first large US solar arrays.

The hardware was blunt and heavy. It measured about the size of a double refrigerator and massed roughly 635 kg, or about 1,400 pounds. Most of that was structure and plumbing built to survive launch and years in space. That toughness would matter later, because sturdy, dense hardware tends to survive reentry heating better than thin panels do.

Why it was thrown overboard

By 2007 the tank had lost its job. The station’s permanent, active cooling system had come online, and the spare ammonia was never needed. The EAS sat on the P6 truss, and P6 had to be relocated to its permanent spot on the far end of the station’s backbone. Before the truss could move, the dead tank had to come off.

NASA weighed the options and chose the simplest: throw it away. On 23 July 2007, during a spacewalk on Expedition 15, astronaut Clay Anderson rode the station’s robotic arm out to position and pushed the tank into space by hand. Cosmonaut and station commander Fyodor Yurchikhin worked the same EVA. Anderson, leaning back on the fully extended arm, rocked forward and shoved the tank away at roughly one mile per hour, aiming it behind and below the station so it would drift clear and never come back to threaten the outpost. The spacewalk ran 7 hours and 41 minutes.

That one-mile-per-hour push mattered. A gentle nudge opposite the station’s motion drops an object into a lower, faster-decaying orbit while keeping it well away from the ISS. The tank fell away on its own path and began the long slide down.

Tracking its reentry

A 635 kg object in low orbit does not vanish. Space surveillance networks cataloged the EAS and tracked it for the entire 15 months it stayed up. Independent satellite observers followed it too, and the bright, tumbling tank became an easy target for backyard telescopes as its orbit sank.

Atmospheric drag set the pace, and the pace was not steady. Drag on a low satellite rises and falls with solar activity, which puffs up the upper atmosphere when the Sun is active. Predicting the exact reentry day for an uncontrolled object is hard for that reason, and forecasts tightened only as the tank dropped into its final orbits. Trackers narrowed the window to early November 2008.

The concern was not the tank itself but what might reach the ground. NASA’s orbital debris analysts modeled the breakup and estimated that up to 15 fragments could survive the fire of reentry. The largest might mass around 17.5 kg, roughly 40 pounds, heavy enough to do damage if it hit something. The tank also carried residual toxic ammonia, which added to public interest even though the chemical would disperse high in the atmosphere. The odds of any piece striking a person were low, in line with the long safety record of uncontrolled reentries, but they were not zero, and that is what made the event worth watching.

Where it came down

US Space Command placed the reentry on 3 November 2008 at about 04:51 GMT, give or take a minute. The estimated track put the fireball near 48 degrees south, 151 degrees east, over open water south of Tasmania. Early reports differed on whether to call that stretch the Indian Ocean or the Pacific, a reminder that a fast-moving reentry point sitting between ocean basins resists a tidy label. What was clear is that it came down over empty sea, several hundred kilometers south of Australia.

No fireball was confirmed by ground observers, which fit the remote, over-water track and the pre-dawn timing in that part of the world. No debris was recovered. Whatever fragments outlasted the heating fell into the ocean between Australia and New Zealand and sank. The tank ended its flight the way planners hoped an uncontrolled reentry of a heavy object would end, over water and away from people.

The EAS caught the public eye for a mix of reasons that rarely line up in one object. It was the most massive thing ever cast off the ISS by hand at the time, a record it held until crews began jettisoning far larger battery pallets years later. A person had pushed 635 kg of hardware into orbit with a shove, an image that stuck. The tank held toxic ammonia, which raised the stakes in coverage even though the risk to anyone on the ground stayed small.
